Of Godlike Men by Molly Colton transports readers to early 20th-century Florida, where Griffin Quade returns to claim his inheritance at his family's plantation. Blessed or cursed with supernatural abilities, Griffin must navigate the complex web of Southern society while dealing with forces both human and otherworldly. His growing romance with Bithia Sibbings, a woman trapped by societal expectations, adds another layer of complexity to his struggles. As Griffin delves deeper into his family's history, he uncovers dark secrets that threaten not only his future but the lives of everyone he holds dear. The novel explores themes of power, privilege, and the weight of family legacy against the backdrop of a detailed historical setting.

Author Molly Colton creates a truly gorgeous gothic atmosphere, perfectly balancing supernatural elements with historical detail in a credible way. The portrayal of the American South captures both its beauty and its darkness, creating a setting that is authentic and alive, but also multisensory so readers feel everything Griffin feels. The complicated relationship between Griffin and Bithia develops with beautiful complexity, addressing both personal desires and societal constraints of the era in authentic dialogue. The language is also relatable to modern audiences, and the emotions are high but never overdone. The deep exploration of family trauma and inherited guilt brought a new psychological depth to the supernatural elements that make everything realistic, even when the otherworldly influences take over the plot. The way Colton handles themes of prejudice and power creates resonant parallels with contemporary issues while remaining true to the historical setting, and I feel many historical writers can learn from this sensitive but realistic approach. Overall, Of Godlike Men offers readers a haunting and thought-provoking exploration of power, love, and redemption in the American South, and I would certainly recommend it to historical fiction readers.

Bio

I quit school at the age of 16 so no, I don't have any degrees.   I began writing stories when I was 11 years old.  Never completed a story back then, however, I was complimented by an English teacher for a particular short story I wrote in my freshman year.  I can't remember what it was about. (I'm 68 years old) I never considered writing as a career in my early years.  Like all good parents, my mom and dad told me,  'You have to work hard for what you want.'  By work, I mean physical labor.  So I've spent many years doing just that. Back in the late 70's I actually worked three jobs at once.  Work left little time for writing, and I went through many periods of depression as well, which tends to stifle imagination. When creative juices were flowing, it was fantastic. Writing was very enjoyable.  It was also an escape. Suffice it to say, I didn't have much of a life. When I wasn't writing, I was reading. Historical and romance novels were the choice at the time, and there was the occasional book on the paranormal. Later on as my writing grew, my reading was mostly for research.  It still is.  I won't tackle a project until I have gathered what I consider adequate knowledge of the subject, area, historical data, etc.    I like a lot of dialogue, and that is also reflected in my writing.  I have six short stories listed on Amazon. They're for kindle.  I have a total of ten in this series and  I will eventually edit and condense them all into one full novel and create a paperback.  There are of course, other projects that need to be completed. Until then, I will keep you updated on my work.  Happy reading.
